Bread and Butter Pickles

I haven't had these in years but I still remember them like yesterday. My grandma Streeter used to can pickles and applesauce. To this day I have never had better of either one. I have never made these but some rainy Sunday, I am definitely going to try.

5 qts. slices cukes (3 med = 1 qt.)
6 med. sliced onions (or less)
3 cloves garlic cut up
1 green pepper, cut in strips
1 sweet red pepper in strips
1/3 cup salt
3 cups whit vinegar
5 cups sugar
1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
1 1/2 tsp. celery seed
2 Tbsp mustard seed

Slice cukes thick, add onions, garlic and pepper strips, add salt. Cover with cracked ice. Mix thoroughly. Let stand 3 hours. Drain. Combine remaining ingredients. Pour over cukes. Heat to boiling. Seal in jars.

Makes 8 pts.
